A 7th minute Jerry Bengtson header was enough to grab a surprise victory for his country while eliminating favorites Spain from the competition at St. James’ Park.

Spain had their chances in the match as they struck the post on three occasions, the Hondurans could’ve ended the match six minutes into the second half as Espinoza saw a headed chance came off the bar. The Hondurans had to fight a huge battle in the second half after an onslaught of attacks by the Spaniards, they fought well and managed to hold on to secure a historic victory and advance into the next phase of the tournament.

The loss leave the Spaniards bottom of Group D with zero points and zero goals scored thus far. Their final match of the competition will see them come up against feloow Group D strugglers Morocco, August 1st at Old Trafford, the home of 19 time English Champions Manchester United and club of goalkeeper David De Gea.

Chelsea Captain John Terry Racially Abused Ferdinand

Chelsea captain John Terry appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court where his racial abuse case started. The former England skipper was accused of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand in a match on October 23rd, 2011. Terry and Ferdinand got into a heated argument and words were exchanged, during this argument Ferdinand allegedly taunted Terry about his affair with the Chelsea captain’s former teammate Wayne Bridges wife in which the skipper responded by racially abusing Ferdinand.

The prosecution was opened by David Penny who said: “The Crown alleges that the words he used demonstrated hostility based on Mr Ferdinand’s membership or presumed membership of a racial group.”

“The Crown alleges that the defendant, most probably in response to physical gestures being made by Mr Ferdinand which the defendant understood to refer to the well-publicised allegation of an extra-marital affair with a team-mate’s wife, shouted at Mr Ferdinand.”

During the case the Chelsea skipper was shown video footage of his alleged racial abuse of Anton Ferdinand. This case is expected by some fans to be a long one where the Chelsea captain could wrongly walk away with just a slap on the wrist even though he deserves more than that. Racism is something that FIFA has been fighting to get rid of from football and behavior like this by the former England captain is highly unacceptable.

“The Crown’s case is that the words were abusive and insulting in a straightforward sense and they were uttered by the defendant in response to goading by Mr Ferdinand on the issue of his extra-marital affair, rather than by way of exaggerated and instant querying of a perceived false allegation.”

It’s A Goal? Goal-Line Technology Approved By FIFA

Over the years football governing body FIFA have been under pressure to intro due  goal-line technology in football. At first fans were skeptical about the introduction of technology in football amidst fears it will slow down the match, some said it will take away some the excitement missed calls sometimes bring to a match.

In a recent meeting held in Zurich the technology was finally approved and will be done by using two systems, Hawk-Eye and GoalRef. This decision came was given the green light by the IFAB after passing a series of tests set out by FIFA.

Jerome Valcke (FIFA General Secretary) said they intend  on introducing goal-line technology in December for the Club World Cup in which will be held in Japan, the Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Over the years there have been many instances of goals being scored but were not allowed as the referee or his linesmen failed to see it. A few notable instances were Manchester United v Tottenham (Premier League 2005), England v Germany (World Cup 2010), Ukraine v England (Euro 2012).

The English FA haven been lobbying for this decision for many years and they have welcomed this news with opened arms.

“We welcome today’s decision by IFAB and will engage in discussions with both Hawkeye and GoalRef in the near future with a view to introducing goal-line technology as soon as is practically possible.”

Los Blancos Are La Liga Champions

Real Madrid won it’s 32nd Spanish league title and their first in four season after a 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on last night. The win leaves Los Blancos seven points clear of their biggest rivals FC Barcelona with two games remaining.

Goals from Gonxalo Higuain, Mesut Ozil and a 44th goal of the La Liga season for their superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Since winning the title in 2008 Madridistas had to endure watching their rivals Barcelona lift the La Liga title. The players, coaches and fans celebrated their triumph in traditional fashion at Cibeles fountain and will continue their celebrations at the Granada over the weekend.

“I won the league title in Portugal, Italy and England, but this one has been the toughest. I’ve won seven league titles overall and I know what it feels like.

“Barcelona won all their games, as befits the great team that they are. They’ve been winning to the very last day.

“They are a club with great tradition that knows we deserved to win this title.”- Jose Mourihno

Despite winning his first La Liga title Mourihno knows his club cannot lose focus as next season they’ll have to fight even harder next season if they are to retain their title.

“We have to celebrate this championship, we have to continue working after tomorrow because next season will also be tough and we have games to play still in this campaign.

It was a tough ans strenuous season for Jose Mourihno and his men and they deservedly won the title that not even their biggest rivals should envy.

Advantage City

The battle of Manchester and the biggest derby match between both United and City went to the blue side.

Manchester City took a big step towards winning their first Premier League title when they defeated neighbors Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium from a powerful Vincent Kompany header.

The Citizens wanted the match more and it showed as they were the better side on the day. United came out with a strategy which was a relatively defensive one as they played with the intention of earning a draw. This negative thinking proved to be a failure as they were continuously giving away corners and finally paid the price in the 1st minute of stoppage time in the first half.

Manchester City captain Vincent was allowed a free header and he gratefully accepted his gift to give his club a 1-0 lead going into halftime. After Plan A failed everyone expected to see some changes in the United lineup  but those changes never came until the 58th minute when Danny Welbeck replaced a seemingly useless Ji-Sung Park.

Regardless of the changes United made in the second half a goal was never on the cards for them as they never posed much of a threat on City’s goal, the City goalkeeper was barely called into any action during the entire match.

The most fight that was showed by anyone who were on the red side of Manchester came from Sir Alex Ferguson after the manager had to be separated from City manager Roberto Mancini on the sidelines.

After today’s victory the title is now in the hands of Manchester City as they only need to win their two remaining matches against Newcastle and QPR who is managed by their former manager Mark Hughes.
