Ronaldo’s Legacy: O Fenômeno

Before Cristiano Ronaldo dazzled defenders while playing in the jerseys of Manchester United and Real Madrid with his step overs there was Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, the original Ronaldo. Arguably the best and most prolific scorers of this generation of football has hung up his boot after a career that spanned 17 years.

Ronaldo’s career started at Brazilian club Cruzeiro where he scored 12 goals in 14 games and helped the club to win the Copa do Brasil for the first time in their history. In 1994 he was a member of Brazil’s World Cupwinning side, at the age of 17 years he never got a chance to play. Later that year he joined Dutch side PSV where he scored 30 goals in his debut season but was unable to emulate this form the next season due to a knee injury.

After winning the Dutch Cup for PSV he then made a record move to FC Barcelona for 17m where he continued his prolific goal scoring but his time at the Catalan club lasted one season due to a contract dispute, he scored an impressive 47 goals in 49 matches and won the 3 titles for the club (Supercopa de España, Copa del Rey, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup).

Inter Milan signed the Brazilian forward for £19m after he bought out the remainder of his contract with FC Barcelona. During his years playing for theNerazzurri Ronaldo suffered a knee injury which ended his season, in 2000 he made a comeback from his injury but it was a comeback that lasted 7 minutes against Lazio in the 1st leg of the Coppa Italia. This was one of the Brazilian’s turbulent time in his footballing career, he later had two operations on his knee and went through months of rehab.

In 2002 Ronaldo was on the move again, this time he signed to Spanish giants Real Madrid for €39 million. He made his debut for the club in October of that year and scored twice. His debut season in Los Blancos was a success as he managed to score 23 league goals, won the La Liga title, Intercontinental & Spanish Super Cup. One of Ronaldo’s most memorable matches while at Real Madrid was scoring a hat-trick against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the 2nd leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

After spending 5 years for Real Madrid it was time for Ronaldo to move on again, this time it was a trip back Italy this time in the colors of AC Milan where he wore the #99 jersey. His second stint in Italy wasn’t a good one as he had 20 appearances and scored 9 goals in an injury plagued season. Ronaldo’s knee problems once again had come into the spotlight and placed the player on the sidelines for a third time and eneded his time at AC Milan.

The Brazilian returned to his native Brazil where he joined Corinthians and scored 10 goals to help them win the Campeonato Paulista. Ronaldo was also instrumental in Corinthians winning the Copa do Brasil in 2009 which was his second time winning this trophy, the first time coming with Cruzeiro. On Monday February 14th in a press conference a tearful Ronaldo closed the curtains on a career that saw him score 247 goals in 343 appearances for his clubs & 62 goals in 92 appearances for Brazil.

… Thanks For the memories Ronaldo …
