Pele: Messi Is No Greatest Ever

Is Messi the best ever?

This has been one of footbal’s hottest debate recently, everyone from fans, coaches and sports analysts have all given their opinion on the matter and the majority results goes to Pele.

I’ve never seen Pele play an actual match live but i have seen clips and video’s of his performances and he was spectacular. So i missed out on one great but i’ve gotten the chance to see another one play week in week out even though i do not support his club team but internationally i admire his national team.

The question of whether Messi is the best ever was asked to whom the football world always hear about and that’s Brazilian and world football Legend Pele.

The legendary player had his opinion on the matter and said:

“When Messi’s scored 1,283 goals like me, when he’s won three World Cups, we’ll talk about it,” Pele told French newspaper Le Monde. I like Messi a lot, he’s a great player. Technically, we’re practically at the same level.

“He’s a great player for Barcelona, but when he plays for Argentina he doesn’t have the same success.

“People always ask me: ‘When is the new Pele going to be born?’ Never. My father and mother have closed the factory.”

To Messi’s credit he has won the La Liga (Spanish League Title) five times, won 3 UEFA Champions, 2 World Club Championships, he recently became the fourth player to win the Ballon d’Or (Given to the World’s best player) three consecutive years, his only international glory came in 2008 when his team won the Gold Medal in the Olympics.

At 24 years old and with no signs of slowing down there is still time for Messi to gain some ground on the legendary Pele.

  1. I do agree that the media makes things more complicated than they should be. You are spot on when you said: “no one will ever know because its two different periods and the game has changed and also the players physically”.

Our generation might say the defense back then was weak and the older generation might say that the defense nowadays is soft, the debate could go on for days and no agreement will be met.
The impact of Pele on football will never be accomplished.

  2. Interesting article indeed but I would definitely love to hear what Messi thinks about being compared to the legendary PELE and I’m sure he would be humbled to even be mentioned in the same sentence as PELE. Messi is most definitely the best player presently and that will come with the media blitz and the comparisons such as is “Kobe better than MJ”. With that being said no one will ever know because its two different periods and the game has changed and also the players physically but what I do know is PELE has done more for football than any player will ever accomplish.
